The production process of ping pong
2025-08-05

A seemingly simple Ping pong actually requires complex steps and a long processing time. From raw materials to a finished high-quality Ping pong, it usually takes about 5 months, and even the processing alone takes about 50 days. To manufacture balls with no deviation and strong bounce, manufacturers must continuously gain experience during the long manufacturing process and develop a well-established production technique. If players understand the production process of Ping pong, they can truly appreciate its value.
Ping pong Price - The manufacturing process of Ping pong is as follows:
1. Raw materials -> 2. Extrusion -> 3. Smoothing -> 4. Softening -> 5. First forming -> 6. Drying -> 7. Cutting -> 8. Thickness measurement -> 9. Bonding -> 10. Hot air drying -> 11. Weight measurement -> 12. First grinding -> 13. Drying -> 14. Second forming -> 15. Second grinding -> 16. Inspection and identification -> 17. Sealing and production
Extrusion and grinding — Cutting more than 100kg of celluloid raw material into 0.8mm thick celluloid sheets. Then placing these celluloid sheets into a press to form circular thin sheets. The surface of these circular sheets needs to be polished smooth.
Ping pong Price - Softening - Soaking the pre-cut celluloid (nitrocellulose) in a solution of 70% water and 30% alcohol. The purpose of this process is to soften the celluloid sheets to facilitate subsequent steps.
First forming — Placing the softened celluloid discs into hot water, inserting a hemispherical object with a radius similar to a standard Ping pong ball from below, shaping the celluloid disc into a hemisphere. This step is very important. The quality of a ball often depends on the quality of this part of the process. It can determine 70% of a Ping pong ball's quality.
DRY & CUT - After the first forming, soak these hemispherical balls in an alcohol solution. Then take them out and let them dry for 2 days, then manually cut off the excess edges of the hemispheres. After this treatment, the hemispherical samples are completed.
Thickness determination — A complete Ping pong ball is made by combining two hemispheres. To combine hemispheres of the same thickness, a series of measurements must be conducted to distinguish them.
Bonding - After measuring thickness, place two matching hemispheres together. Apply solvent at the seam, melt and bond simultaneously to form a spherical shape.
Hot air drying - After bonding the two matching hemispheres, dry with hot air for about a week. Then measure the weight, distinguishing by 1/100g standard.
After the first grinding, naturally dry for 30 to 40 days, then proceed to the second forming stage. To correct seam differences and determine the ball size, the forming process will be carried out while heating.
Because sometimes the interface position between hemispheres has slight deviations or the celluloid thickness is uneven, a final inspection is required.
Place the assembled balls on an inclined plane for rolling tests; those that roll in a straight line are marked with three stars, and the rest are used as practice balls.
